The NBA’s free agency market has significantly slowed down in recent days, as the most of the major free agents have already inked deals with their new teams.
After acquiring Klay Thompson in a sign-and-trade transaction, the Dallas Mavericks signed him to a three-year contract; but, the Mavs have been quiet otherwise.
With 14 players still under contract, they still have an open roster slot. However, with the Mavs’ move on Wednesday afternoon, one of their three two-way places is officially gone.
Brandon Williams is back with the Dallas Mavericks on a two-way deal.
Mavs PR reports that Dallas inked Brandon Williams to a two-way contract for the next campaign. The Mavs acquired Williams on a two-way contract in the midst of the previous campaign, and he proved to be a wise addition as he dominated the G League.
Last season, Williams averaged 24.1 points per game for the Texas Legends. Despite his limited playing time, he scored some runs for the Mavericks.
Williams played for Dallas in 17 games, averaging 3.2 points and 1.0 assists per contest. Though he is an excellent young prospect to hang onto, he won’t be playing for the Mavs anytime soon.
Williams, who is just 24 years old, has demonstrated repeatedly in the G League that he is a capable bucket-getter. He easily reaches the rim because to his great agility and tight grip. For an undersized guard, he finishes well near the rim and has a reliable pull-up mid-range shot.
Williams always has the confidence to let it fly when it’s necessary and takes and makes difficult shots, even though his 3-point shooting statistics don’t seem fantastic. He isn’t one to light it up from downtown, but if he can consistently make 3-pointers, his drives to the rim will open up even more, making him even more dynamic.
Dallas made the right decision in signing Williams to a two-way contract once more, especially in light of their need for depth in the backcourt. Who knows? Maybe Williams will keep improving and find his way into the Mavs rotation in the future.
