Due to Christian McCaffrey’s Achilles problem, the San Francisco 49ers may require a backup quarterback, and a well-known player might be the solution. JaMycal Hasty of the New England Patriots is a running back who is familiar with both the organization and head coach Kyle Shanahan, but the 49ers may be without McCaffrey until the end of the season.
Sports Illustrated writer Tom Jensen made the suggestion, and he also suggests another former Niner.
The Niners may try to acquire free agent running back Matt Breida or trade former running back JaMycal Hasty to New England in exchange for a seventh pick. Both fit Shanahan’s preference for players who have worked in his system before,” Jensen wrote on October 1.
Although Breida has the advantage of being a free agent, either choice would make sense. While neither player would be a game-changer in terms of output, they would both be solid depth choices.
In any case, the 49ers will probably be on the lookout for potential RB additions. McCaffrey’s injuries seem to be getting worse with each update, and it’s uncertain when he will fully heal.
McCaffrey Appears to Have Double Achilles Tendinitis As if the diagnosis of an Achilles injury wasn’t severe enough, it appears that McCaffrey has tendinitis in both of his Achilles. Reporter Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports broke the story first, though general manager John Lynch had already brought it up in the lead-up to Week 4.
Though undoubtedly worse than anticipated, the second Achilles problem is not a fresh wound. Shanahan discussed the circumstances at his press conference on September 30.
Shanahan responded, “No, throughout the time he’s had it in both.” It started in one, you overcompensate, and it spread to the other, in my opinion. He’s got it in both, but primarily one of them has simply been irritating him.
Long recoveries and major operations are usually required for Achilles injuries, but McCaffrey’s current demands are unknown. The 49ers have been successfully utilizing RB Jordan Mason in the meantime.
In four starts, the 25-year-old running back has amassed 447 rushing yards and three touchdowns, averaging 4.9 yards per carry.
Could the 49ers benefit from Matt Breida?
Hasty is a desirable option because he would only require a low draft pick, but Breida can sign with any team at any time. Since the 2019 season, the seasoned RB has not been on the San Francisco field. Since then, he has played for the New York Giants, Buffalo Bills, and Miami Dolphins.
Compared to Hasty, Breida has a lot more experience; in 2023, she even started games for New York. His last campaign, meanwhile, was a terrible one; on average, he gained only 2.7 yards per run.However, compared to the Giants’ 2023 squad, the 49ers’ offensive line is in much better shape. Furthermore, it is unlikely that Breida will be asked to take the lead. Alternatively, San Francisco can offer assistance in different ways by drawing on his extensive expertise as a blocker and power back.Regarding the deal’s finances, there are also no concerns because Breida would probably sign for the veteran minimum.
