Steven Adams is gearing up for his 11th season in the NBA, yet he’s still adjusting to his role with the Houston Rockets after being traded from the Memphis Grizzlies in February. Unfortunately, Adams didn’t get any playing time last season due to a knee injury that sidelined him for the entirety of the 2023-24 season. Now that he has completed his rehabilitation, he’s cleared for unrestricted gameplay, but he emphasized the importance of pacing himself as he enters this new chapter.
During the Rockets’ media day, Adams acknowledged the need for caution. “I have to be smart with how I approach gameplay. It’s a two-year process, which doesn’t mean I can’t play; it just means I need to be careful,” he explained. Reflecting on his challenging journey through rehabilitation, Adams described the emotional toll of dealing with his first significant injury since entering the league in 2012. “It’s tough emotionally; it feels bad. It’s just one of those things that happens with joints. You have to reset your mindset. Usually, performance is measured by wins or losses, but during rehab, it’s about celebrating small victories and learning to take a step back,” he said.
As he embarks on this season, Adams will serve as a veteran presence for a Rockets team that features promising young talent, including guards Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun, along with high draft picks like Jabari Smith Jr., Amen Thompson, and Reed Sheppard. The team has made notable free-agent signings, including Fred VanVleet and Dillon Brooks, contributing to a roster that has been rebuilding after finishing near the bottom of the Western Conference for three consecutive seasons. After a better showing last season, the Rockets are looking to continue their upward trajectory.
“I’m still figuring out my role and impact,” Adams remarked. Although he has participated in some pick-up games, he noted that those experiences differ from the structured dynamics of an actual game. “You can ask me again in a month, and I’ll have a much clearer answer,” he said. He also praised the team’s talent and noted their high-paced play towards the end of the previous season.
Adjusting to life in Houston, his fourth NBA city after stints in Oklahoma City, New Orleans, and Memphis, Adams is still exploring the area. “I’m definitely excited to be part of the organization, but I haven’t had much time to explore the city yet,” he admitted.
Teaming up with former Grizzlies player Dillon Brooks again, Adams received high praise from Brooks, who described him as an unmovable force on the court. “He sets solid screens and loves passing the ball; he’s one of the most selfless players I know,” Brooks noted. He emphasized Adams’ exceptional rebounding ability and the intimidating presence he brings to the game. “He’s one of my favorite teammates, and he finds ways to elevate those around him,” Brooks added.
With the NBA preseason set to kick off on October 8 NZT, the Rockets are looking forward to their season opener on October 24.
