HOUSTON — During a recent meeting, the Houston Texans’ offense engaged in a spirited discussion as they prepared for their season opener against the Indianapolis Colts. Offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik was outlining a pass play and how he wanted the receivers to adjust their routes against the Colts’ Cover 3 defense. Receiver Stefon Diggs interjected, suggesting that the routes should be shorter. After some back-and-forth between coaches and players, everyone turned to quarterback C.J. Stroud for his input. When asked, Stroud sided with the receivers.
This moment highlights Stroud’s growing influence in his second year and the offensive command coaches encouraged him to develop during the offseason. His leadership was instrumental in the Texans’ narrow 29-27 victory on Sunday. Stroud completed 234 yards and threw two touchdowns, both to Diggs. One touchdown came on a critical fourth-and-goal play with 4:45 left in the game, giving the Texans a 29-20 lead. Another pivotal moment was a third-and-11 pass to Nico Collins that secured a first down and helped clinch the win.
Last season, Stroud became the fifth rookie to pass for over 4,000 yards, leading the Texans to the AFC South title and winning a playoff game at just 22 years old, making him the youngest quarterback to do so.
With high expectations for the Texans in 2024, Stroud is a key factor. Coach DeMeco Ryans emphasized the importance of Stroud taking control of the offense last season, and now he’s evolving into a leader, both on and off the field. He has been proactive in inviting new players like Joe Mixon and Diggs to his home to study the offense and share strategies. The Texans made significant roster upgrades this offseason, investing heavily in new talent, including Mixon and Diggs.
Mixon praised Stroud’s preparation and ability to break down plays and concepts. As part of their training, Stroud took his receivers and tight ends to Miami in mid-July to work on timing and rhythm, focusing on specific routes against various coverages.
Throughout training camp, Stroud has emphasized details, ensuring everyone stays focused during plays and improving his timing on snap motions. His understanding of offensive protections has also deepened, making him a more effective leader on the field.
As the Texans prepare for their home opener against the Chicago Bears, confidence in Stroud’s readiness is high. Ryans believes Stroud now has a better grasp of the overall game. Slowik noted that Stroud’s command has evolved from just focusing on his role to actively helping teammates stay on track.
Heading into Week 1, the Texans had strong odds to win the AFC and the Super Bowl, and those odds have since improved. Stroud recognizes the weight of leadership and accountability in his role, stating, “I’m the captain of the ship, and I’ve got to run it the right way.”
