After losing third baseman Austin Riley to a fractured right hand, the Atlanta Braves faced a daunting challenge. Riley, a two-time All-Star, is expected to be sidelined for up to eight weeks, potentially returning only by the National League Championship Series. Despite this setback, the Braves have found a capable temporary replacement in Gio Urshela.
Urshela, a 32-year-old infielder, was signed by the Braves out of necessity. With Riley out, Luke Williams was the only other option at third base, but he has limited experience with only 283 MLB plate appearances over four years.
Urshela quickly filled the gap, joining the team and starting his first game the day after signing. Although he didn’t get a hit in his debut, he managed to draw a crucial walk with the bases loaded in the eighth inning, providing the Braves with an important insurance run.
In the two games following his debut, Urshela contributed offensively, going 2-for-4 and 1-for-3, respectively. Notably, his ground rule double on Thursday tied the game early against the Philadelphia Phillies, showcasing his ability to deliver in high-pressure situations. The Braves, who have been inconsistent with runners in scoring position, were 3-for-9 in that situation during their 3-2 victory, thanks in part to Urshela’s timely hitting.
This type of performance is vital for the Braves, especially as they navigate injuries to key players like Riley, Ronald Acuña, and Ozzie Albies. Without relying heavily on home runs, the Braves need to excel in clutch hitting to maintain their momentum.
Urshela’s impact has not been limited to his offense. Defensively, he has also made significant contributions. In a critical moment during the Thursday game, with the Braves holding a narrow 3-2 lead, the Phillies threatened with runners on first and second and only one out. Trea Turner, a dangerous hitter, hit a sharp grounder to Urshela’s left.
Urshela expertly fielded the ball and initiated a double play, which was completed by second baseman Whit Merrifield, despite Turner’s speed. This defensive play was crucial, preventing Bryce Harper, a formidable hitter, from having an opportunity to change the game.
While Urshela is not expected to match Riley’s level of play—few third basemen in the league can—his early performances have been encouraging.
His ability to provide solid defense and timely hitting could prove essential for the Braves as they aim to stay competitive and give Riley a chance to return this season. Urshela’s contributions could be pivotal in ensuring the Braves remain in contention through this period of adversity.
