Injuries have heavily impacted the Braves this season. Spencer Strider, a top Cy Young contender, is out for the year, as is star outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr., who tore his ACL in late May. Additionally, Michael Harris, Ozzie Albies, and Max Fried are all currently on the injured list.
Despite these setbacks, the Braves still have a 79% chance of making the playoffs. This situation might prompt front office head Alex Anthopoulos to make a significant move before next week’s MLB trade deadline.
There have been reports linking the Braves to Tampa Bay Rays starter Zach Eflin. The 30-year-old pitcher might be available as the Rays, currently at 51-51 and not looking like strong playoff contenders, could trade some veterans for prospects.
Eflin is having a modest season with a 5-7 record, a 4.09 ERA, and a 1.16 WHIP. However, last season, he led the American League with 16 wins and had a 3.50 ERA and 1.02 WHIP.
Chris Sale, acquired from the Boston Red Sox, is currently leading the Braves’ rotation with a 13-3 record, a 2.70 ERA, and a 0.96 WHIP. Reynaldo López has also performed well, boasting a 2.12 ERA and 1.19 WHIP.
Given Fried’s injury issues and Strider being out for the season, the Braves clearly need rotation help.
