Tennessee’s Hawkins County (WJHL) — Star dirt track racer Scott Bloomquist passed away on Friday in an aircraft accident in Tennessee.
According to information provided to Nexstar’s WJHL by Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office officials, Bloomquist, 60, was the plane’s pilot and sole occupant.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, Bloomquist’s aircraft, a single-engine Piper J3, crashed into a barn close to Mooresburg on Friday morning at around 7:50 a.m. Not long after, members of the county’s rescue team arrived on the scene.
The FAA and sheriff’s office are still looking into what caused the disaster.Iowa-born Bloomquist drove Dirt Super Late Model race cars across the country. The National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame inducted him in 2002.
A statement on the family’s website said, “We are devastated to report that one of the most charismatic and immensely talented to ever drive a Dirt Late Model tragically lost his life today in a small airplane crash at the family property in Mooresburg, TN.” Facebook’s Hall of Fame on Friday. “We extend our sincere sympathies to Scott’s loved ones, Ron, Georgie, and Ariel; his devoted friends; and all of his devoted followers.
