The Miami Heat didn’t make many summer adjustments, which kept them in the background among the rising contenders in the Eastern Conference.
The great Karl-Anthony Towns was acquired by the New York Knicks from the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday, elevating their ceiling even further. The team was already competitive. Towns was acquired by the Knicks in exchange for Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo, and a first-round selection. It seems the Heat had an opportunity to not just take center stage but also to avert this big-ticket purchase. As per SNY’s NBA writer Ian Begley, “Detroit, Atlanta, Miami among the other teams NYK talked to about trades of Julius Randle, per SNY sources.”
Towns would never have been regarded as a destination in New York by Minnesota’s front management had the Heat acquired Randle earlier in the summer. Rather, the Heat’s core from past seasons returns for the upcoming campaign. According to Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic, the Wolves feel that adding Randle and DiVincenzo maximizes their championship window under Anthony Edwards’ leadership.
The Athletic was informed by team sources that the Wolves struck the agreement in order to extend Edwards’ window of opportunity. Krawczynski wrote. “The Wolves wanted to make sure Edwards could be on a competitive playoff team for much longer than just the next two years and believe the flexibility this move provides will aid that pursuit.”
The Heat are depending on young players like Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kel’el Ware, to achieve notable advancements this season.
