The extension is valued at approximately $62.6 million (around £47.5 million), securing Curry $178 million (£135 million) over the next three years. At 36, Curry, a two-time NBA MVP, will become the fourth NBA player to surpass $500 million in career earnings, joining LeBron James, Paul George, and Kevin Durant.
By the end of this new contract, Curry’s on-court earnings will total about $532 million (£403 million), making him the second highest in NBA history, only behind James, who has earned $580 million.
Curry, who has been with the Warriors since they drafted him seventh overall in 2009, will start this season without his long-time teammate Klay Thompson. Despite Curry’s efforts to retain him, Thompson could not reach a new deal with the Warriors and has joined the Dallas Mavericks in free agency, ending his 13-year tenure with Golden State
Of the four players who participated in each of the Warriors’ NBA championships, Curry and Draymond Green are now the only ones still with the team.
Curry has transformed basketball with his innovative play. Together with Thompson, he earned the nickname ‘Splash Brothers’ for their exceptional three-point shooting.
Curry, despite being just 6 feet 2 inches tall, has set the standard for three-point accuracy, leading to expectations that players at all positions should be adept at shooting and defending from beyond the arc.
In the 2022 season, Curry became the NBA’s all-time leader in three-pointers, currently holding a record of 3,747. That season also saw the Warriors win their fourth championship in eight years, a milestone widely regarded as Curry’s ‘crowning achievement.’
Two years later, Curry’s performance remains strong. Last season, he averaged 26.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 5.1 assists, shooting 45% overall and 40.8% from three-point range.
He led the NBA in three-point field goals for the eighth time in his career, recording 357, which ranks as the third highest total in a single season. Curry holds the top spot with 402 three-pointers in the 2015-16 season.
Last season, Curry also led the league in points (189), three-pointers (32), and field goals made (59) during the crucial final minutes of games.
At the Paris Olympics this summer, the point guard became just the fifth NBA player to win at least four NBA championships, two MVP awards, and an Olympic gold medal, joining LeBron James, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, and Bill Russell.
