PHOENIX — Kayla McBride contributed 19 points and made three of Minnesota’s 11 three-pointers in the Lynx’s 89-76 victory over the Phoenix Mercury on Wednesday night, extending their winning streak to seven games.
Courtney Williams added 16 points and five assists, Napheesa Collier chipped in with 12 points, eight rebounds, and five assists, and Myisha Hines-Allen scored 11 points for Minnesota (23-8). Bridget
Carleton recorded nine points, six rebounds, and five assists.
Minnesota, now a half-game ahead of Connecticut for the second-best record in the WNBA, gained an early advantage with a 17-0 run in the first quarter and maintained control throughout. Phoenix endured a scoring drought exceeding five minutes, allowing the Lynx to turn a 5-3 deficit into a 20-5 lead.
Although the Mercury narrowed the gap to nine points, 46-37, by halftime, Minnesota’s lead expanded to as much as 21 in the third quarter and stood at 71-52 heading into the fourth. Phoenix managed to close the gap to 12 on two occasions in the final period, but Minnesota’s lead proved insurmountable.
Diana Taurasi and Sophie Cunningham each scored 16 points to lead Phoenix (16-16). Kahleah Copper contributed 13 points, Natasha Cloud added 12 points and eight assists, and Brittney Griner tallied 10 points on 3-of-12 shooting.
