On Saturday night, Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever will visit Minneapolis again this season to play against the Minnesota Lynx. The game will be notable for the WNBA and the Lynx, as Maya Moore’s No. 23 jersey will be retired.
Before the Olympic break and their initial game, Team USA and Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve made some dubious remarks about Clark. When asked about the pro-Indiana crowd in Minnesota, Reeve replied, “I don’t give two.”
Before the second Fever-Lynx game, Reeve appeared to completely reverse her earlier statement, emphasizing the importance of having a “roadshow” player like Clark.
Reeve said, “The significance of the win isn’t just about Maya Moore’s jersey being retired; I hope some of you are here for that too. Everywhere Caitlin Clark goes, it’s impressive. In her senior year, it wasn’t just Iowa fans filling Carver; she became a roadshow.”
During her rookie season alone, Clark has not only sold out Fever home games at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, but has also filled arenas in every away game, with a majority of fans cheering for her.
“I don’t remember seeing that in my time,” Reeve continued. “And that’s held true. We’ve wanted to play [in] a league that can sort of transcend some of these spaces and have a roadshow.”
Reeve’s recent remarks about Clark are a stark contrast to her earlier comments. She shifted from dismissing Clark’s roadshow impact to emphasizing its importance for the WNBA, similar to the effect in the NBA.
