John Sterling might return to provide commentary for the New York Yankees’ playoff run.
WFAN’s New York Yankees radio team might bring back a celebrated announcer for the playoffs. According to Andrew Marchand of The Athletic, John Sterling could be set to return as the Yankees’ radio voice for the postseason. Sterling is expected to discuss his return with Chris Oliviero, an executive at WFAN’s parent company, Audacy, to finalize the details.
“The ball is in their court,” Sterling told Marchand. “They would need to make the request. I’d feel bad for the people who have been covering the games all season.”
At 86, Sterling stepped down as the Yankees’ primary announcer in April, ending a 36-year tenure. Since then, various announcers, including Emmanuel Berbari, Rickie Ricardo, and Justin Shackil, have joined color commentator Suzyn Waldman. Additionally, special guests like Meredith Marakovits, Brandon Tierney, and Craig Carton have stepped in as the Yankees (75-53) approach a return to the MLB postseason.
Marchand’s report indicates that Sterling’s willingness, or lack thereof, to cover both home and road playoff games could be a key issue in his possible return. Sterling had significantly reduced his travel for road games in his later years and mentioned the demanding travel schedule as a factor in his decision to step down.
This week, Sterling made a short return to the WFAN booth, calling a few innings during the 9-5 loss to the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday. Despite his reduced role, Sterling remains a familiar presence in the Bronx, with his iconic call “Yankees win! Theeeeeeeee Yankees win!” continuing to be played over the loudspeakers at Yankee Stadium after each Yankees victory.
