On Sunday, the Detroit Tigers had the exciting chance to play in the Little League Classic against the New York Yankees. Before their game in Williamsport, PA, they interacted with Little Leaguers. This marked the eighth edition of the event, which allows two Major League teams to attend Little League World Series games to support youth baseball. Players and their families later enjoyed the Major League game in person that evening.

The Tigers’ game ended in thrilling fashion. Trailing 1-0 going into the bottom of the ninth, Jace Jung, the team’s latest addition, hit a single to tie the game and send it into extra innings. In the 10th inning, after Zach McKinstry once again evened the score, Parker Meadows delivered a walk-off single, securing a 3-2 win for Detroit. While this victory may not have significant short-term impact, it was exciting to see promising young players who could shape the team’s future.

New York Yankees star Aaron Judge recently praised Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal after his impressive performance. On June 3, 2024, Skubal, who pitched six innings allowing just one run and three hits with five strikeouts, exited the game against the Texas Rangers. On Sunday, the Tigers played in the Little League Classic against the Yankees, where they had the chance to engage with Little Leaguers before their game in Williamsport, PA. The Tigers secured a thrilling 3-2 victory, with Jace Jung’s game-tying single and Parker Meadows’ walk-off hit. This win, while not significant in the short term, showcased the potential of the Tigers’ young talent, including Skubal’s strong performance on the mound.

“He’s the best pitcher in the game right now… When he returned at the end of last season, he reached a whole new level. Facing someone like that is tough, but competing against the best is exciting,” said Aaron Judge, according to MLB insider Jon Morosi.

This high praise is significant, especially considering Judge’s teammate is reigning AL Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole, and another Cy Young winner, Blake Snell, has thrown a no-hitter and continues to dominate. It highlights just how impressive Skubal is.

Skubal currently leads MLB starting pitchers with a 2.49 ERA and 14 wins. He ranks second in WHIP (0.93) and fWAR (4.5), and is third in strikeouts (185) as of Monday. His dominance puts him on the brink of potentially winning his first AL Cy Young award. With Skubal anchoring Detroit’s rotation, the team’s future looks promising, provided their top prospects continue to grow and the front office makes the right additions to support their ace.
