Travis Sanheim took the initiative to announce his Philadelphia Flyers teammate Travis Konecny’s contract extension before the team did. Sanheim broke the news on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, six minutes ahead of the official Flyers’ announcement, revealing that Konecny signed an eight-year deal worth $8.75 million annually. In his post, Sanheim humorously cited an image of a smiling Konecny as his source.
This extension comes after a period of trade rumors amid the Flyers’ rebuilding phase, marking a long-term commitment between Konecny and the team. Flyers GM Daniel Briere praised Konecny’s contributions, highlighting his leadership, work ethic, and importance to the team’s future success. Konecny had a stellar last season, leading the team with 33 goals and 68 points, and topping the NHL in shorthanded goals.
Selected 24th overall in the 2015 NHL draft, Konecny has played 564 games, scoring 174 goals and 226 assists. With this new contract, Konecny is set to stay with the Flyers through the 2032-33 season. Expressing his excitement, Konecny emphasized his eagerness to be part of the team’s promising future. Meanwhile, Sanheim, who shared the news, remains under contract with the Flyers until the 2030-31 season.
