In a story published on July 18, Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report outlined his reasoning for thinking the Knicks should sign Hayward.
Buckley stated, “If a minimum deal is feasible, though, that’s a low-percentage shot worth taking.” Even if his days as an All-Star are long gone, he can still provide some dependable secondary playmaking and backup scoring. Despite having one of his least productive seasons to date, he finished it with a 46.4/41.1/74.2 shooting slash and 9.8 points and 3.1 assists per game in 24.4 minutes of action.
Because of how good Hayward was at his best, the Boston Celtics, the Knicks’ opponent, once signed him to a max contract. Although Hayward is no longer an All-Star at age 34, Buckley notes that he is still a versatile wing. He just finished a four-year, $120 million deal that he inked in 2020 with the Charlotte Hornets.
