A well-known MLB expert says the Seattle Mariners have a very good chance of signing four players before July 30, but one-time National League MVP Cody Bellinger is not one of them.Over the last two weeks, the Mariners’ once-dominant lead in the American League West has vanished. As of today’s MLB games, they are tied for first place with their opponents, the Houston Astros. And all indications are that the division title would be contested fiercely in the second half.That is why the organization must make many changes to improve its roster. To give its elite pitching staff a greater opportunity of leading the team to the playoffs. The squad has recently been linked to a number of players on the trade market. And their ownership appears eager to do whatever it takes to bring in some impact bats before July 30.
However, SiriusXM MLB Channel commentator Mike Ferrin believes that just a small number of players are feasible targets for the organization. Jazz Chisholm, the Miami Marlins’ standout, is one such example. A player linked to the M’s recently. However, he believes Mariners supporters should not get their hopes up over reports of a transfer for slugger Cody Bellinger.
“The most common name you’ll hear with them is Jazz Chisholm. There have been some speculations about if the Cubs are open to negotiate about Cody Bellinger. “I’m skeptical about that,” Ferrin told Sportsnaut on Thursday. “While ownership is willing to open the cophers this year, Bellinger has player options worth $30 million and $20 million over the next two years .”They pared back payroll this year.
“This is due in part to the uncertainty surrounding regional sports networks. I’m not sure if they’ll pursue anybody beyond this year.”Could Brent Rooker and Taylor Ward be on the Seattle Mariners’ trade deadline wish list? “If Oakland is willing to talk about Brent Rooker, I think he’s a really good fit,” Ferrin said. “A right-handed batter. He was an All-Star one year ago. He had a better year this year. [He’s] a power batter who would undoubtedly fit the model of what they might use.
“From conversations I’ve had, it doesn’t seem like they’d be interested in some of the guys Tampa Bay is talking about.” “Maybe Taylor Ward from the Angels,” he continued. “He’s not the most exciting player, but he’s made some solid contributions in the outfield. Mark Canha is with Detroit. Those are the components I believe they will try to acquire because they are the most easily acquired.”
Ferrin thinks Luis Robert Jr. may be an option as well. However, he believes the 2023 All-Star would not resolve the Seattle Mariners’ present on-base woes. And would simply add to it.
