CARLA, California – Soon, a well-known player will be joining the Santa Clara men’s basketball team again. Transfer guard Carlos Stewart, who spent his first two seasons with the Broncos after attending LSU, has re-signed with Santa Clara and will play for the team in 2024–25.
Head coach Herb Sendek remarked, “We are happy to welcome Carlos back!” “It will be great to see him in a Bronco uniform again.”
Stewart, a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, originally signed with the Broncos in 2021–2022. During his two seasons in the red and white, Stewart participated in 66 career games with 35 starts for Santa Clara, where he was named the Gatorade State Player of the Year as a senior. The 6-foot-1 guard had a great rookie season before busting out as a sophomore, starting all 33 games and was named to the First Team All-WCC. His 15.2 points per game on 44.1 percent shooting tied him for the team’s second-highest scoring average (behind Brandin Podziemski), and it was good for 11th place in the WCC. He was also a strong 83.2 percent at the charity stripe and connected on 40.3% of his shots from beyond the arc. Stewart scored in double figures 24 times, with a high of 29 points versus UC Irvine (12/15/22), and 10 of those scoring efforts coming in 20-point games. Stewart tied for the conference lead with 2.1 steals per game while averaging 15.4 points per game (10th in the league) against league opponents.
Stewart stayed on for two years before going back to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to play for LSU in 2023–2024. Before sustaining a season-ending knee injury in the SEC opener against Texas A&M, he participated in 13 games, including nine starts. He played 19.4 minutes a night with an average of 4.7 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.0 assists before the injury.
Stewart, a senior with one more year of eligibility, is back with the Broncos.
