If the Lakers can sign a few of these players, they still have a chance to salvage their summer.
The Los Angeles Lakers are still in the process of signing a free agent for the summer. The Lakers are running out of time to turn things around after terribly missing out on their primary targets. GM Rob Pelinka needs to move quickly and decisively if he is to assemble a group worthy of a championship.
Luckily for the Lakers, a few impactful free agents remain available to join Los Angeles. The Lakers will have to rely on players on the trade block and cheap deals because they don’t have a lot of cap room. The Lakers can use a variety of strategies to bolster their squad because they have numerous gaps to cover at various positions. Let’s examine the five most advantageous targets for them.
Gary Trent Jr.
Gary Trent Jr. is a more likely candidate to be the Lakers’ first summer free agent acquisition. The 25-year-old shooting guard is allegedly willing to leave the Toronto Raptors after he became unrestricted free agency this summer.
Despite having a poor season in 2023–24, the shooter’s skill set fits in well in Los Angeles. His lifetime percentage from downtown is 38.6% with 6.4 attempts per game. He is a flexible shooter who can make movement threes or catch-and-shoot shots with ease. Trent would fit well next to LeBron James and Anthony Davis on the Lakers, given the absence of off-ball threats on the team. Trent is a great shooter, and Los Angeles needs to spread the floor as much as possible.
