Following a successful debut season in 2023, the New York Yankees announced that the Summer Night Lights Program will return this summer in partnership with Major League Baseball’s PLAY BALL initiative.

To carry out this initiative, which aims to keep local youth involved in recreation and character-building activities on summer evenings, the Yankees will collaborate with the New York City Department of Youth & Community Development (DYCD), NYC Parks, The Players Alliance, SCAN-Harbor, and Poland Spring® Spring Water.

Approximately 300 Bronx kids

and teens, ages 12 to 18, will be able to play coed softball and baseball in tournament-style matches at Elston Gene Howard Field, the site of the former Yankee Stadium, on Tuesday and Wednesday nights starting on July 9 and running through the end of August. The evening program was selected as an addition to the few scheduled evening events the age group might participate in during the summer.

A group effort called Summer Night Lights aims to promote baseball-related activities as a means of social responsibility, leisure, and healthy competition. Furthermore, by bringing together youth from all across the Bronx, boundaries—both natural and territorial—can be broken down in a way that fosters community.

The NYC DYCD and the NYPD Blue Chips Program oversee the program’s daily operations.
