A week and a half ago, the leadership of the New Orleans Pelicans made one of the more notable moves of the NBA offseason so far by acquiring Dejounte Murray from the Atlanta Hawks. The trade package centered around Dyson Daniels, Larry Nance Jr., and included two first-round picks, one of which originates from the Los Angeles Lakers this year. Despite a less than ideal fit alongside Trae Young in Atlanta, Murray brings significant playmaking skills to a Pelicans team that struggled with shot creation during their playoff sweep by the Oklahoma City Thunder last spring.
Recently, Murray participated in his introductory press conference with the Pelicans, expressing his enthusiasm about joining the franchise.
“In this business, I understand my role as a basketball player… As for New Orleans, this is home now,” Murray stated, as reported by Don Barzini on X.
Murray also shared his thoughts on Zion Williamson, describing him as the team’s superstar and expressing eagerness to elevate Williamson’s game further.
Williamson’s future with the Pelicans remains somewhat uncertain amid ongoing contract negotiations and persistent trade rumors this offseason. Nevertheless, he is acknowledged as an elite perimeter scorer and serviceable defender when healthy and engaged.
The Pelicans, having retained their core group through the trade, appear poised to field a formidable roster in the increasingly competitive Western Conference. Murray joins CJ McCollum, Brandon Ingram, and Williamson in what promises to be a potent starting lineup. Despite potential challenges in meshing their talents and covering for each other’s weaknesses, particularly uncertainties surrounding Ingram’s future and Williamson’s health, the team’s potential is undeniable.
The ultimate key for the Pelicans remains the health of Zion Williamson, who was on track for his first sustained playoff appearance before a late injury sidelined him last season. With Williamson in top form and Murray contributing alongside McCollum, the Pelicans have the potential to emerge as a serious contender in the Western Conference.
