Forward Mitch Marner of the Toronto Maple Leafs is expected to return to the organization for the 2024–25 NHL season, according to NHL source Chris Johnston.
As he approaches the last year of the seven-year, $65.4 million contract he signed in 2019, Marner has been the focus of trade rumors ever since Toronto was eliminated in the playoffs. Despite the fact that Marner has been traded around a lot and been made fun of, Johnston believes he will stay in Toronto.

On The Chris Johnston Show, Johnston stated, “I think they are comfortable with Mitch Marner returning if that is how things turn out, if there isn’t enough interest, or if a trade that kind of even makes sense.”
Despite all the trade speculations, as Johnston states, Toronto is fine with Marner playing out his contract and returning for the 2024–25 NHL season.
In 69 games during the regular season with Toronto last year, Marner tallied 26 goals and 59 assists for 85 points.
Coach of the New Maple Leafs Wants to Lead Marner
Sheldon Keefe was replaced by Craig Berube, a Stanley Cup-winning head coach, who was hired by Toronto.
After the NHL draft on June 29, Berube told reporters he was eager to work with Marner as a coach.

Despite being one of the NHL’s best players, many observers predicted that the Maple Leafs would want to trade Marner because their core group of players hasn’t performed well.
The Maple Leafs have only won one postseason series in the last eight years since Marner joined Toronto on a full-time basis in 2016. Marner has skated in 57 games during his playoff career, tallying 11 goals and 39 assists for 50 points.
Berube claimed that in addition to wanting to teach Marner, he has spoken with every Maple Leaf player via phone, Zoom, or in-person.
